Christopher Kolomondos (Kallas)

January 30, 1923 - April 30, 1980

Chris Kallas (Kolomondos)

was born in the village of Thanos, Lemnos

on the 30th January 1923.

Chris travelled by ship to Australia at the age of 14

to join his siblings.

At the age of 21 he joined the Australian Army (Service Number – N321062)

for two and a half years (Date Of Discharge: 15 Jun 1943).

He married at the age of 23.

Before joining the army he worked at various cafes in Wagga, Yass and Tumut.

His first business was a fruit shop at the Spot in Randwick.

He was part of the first Committee of the Lemnian Association “Maroula” in Sydney.

Chris sadly passed away on the 30th April 1980, in Greece

at the age of 56 years.

A friend who had a barber shop in “The Atlas Club” offered him a position there that later inspired him to open his own barber shop in Bourke St. Taylor’s Square, Darlinghurst, next to “Bavveas Cake Shop” (now Christopher’s). He was there for over 30 years, he had a massive heart attack at the shop and it took over a year for him to recover with mum’s loving care.
Longing to return to his “patritha” where he grew up in the village of Thanos in Lemnos, my mum, brother and his wife went altogether. He was so happy and excited remembering everything from his youth. They spent 3 weeks there reminiscing, but sadly the night before they were to return home dad passed away in his beloved homeland, although he always called Australia home and wanted to be buried here…

Dad your always in our thoughts, you’ll never be forgotten, we miss you so much…
If tears could build a stairway
and a memories a lane,
I’d walk right up to heaven
and bring you home again (extract from Diane Kyriakides’ facebook page posted on the 30th April 2020, In memory of her dad)

Chris is remembered for his kindness, good humour , integrity and support. At his barbershop he was always ready to make and share a greek coffee, have a chat, a laugh, and a good conversation. In the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s he helped and assisted many newly arrived Greek migrants. (extract from Helen Vavayis facebook page)
