Stathis George Payzis, well known Greek cafe proprietor, died in Newcastle on Saturday (22/09/45) and was buried in the Church of England section of Sandgate Cemetery this afternoon. Rev. Mitrofanis Nicolaides came from Sydney to conduct the service. Since his arrival from Greece more than 40 years ago. Mr. Payzis has never left Newcastle, not even for a brief holiday. He enjoyed the friendship of the Australian and Greek communities many of whom attended his funeral. He and his brother established one of the first and most flourishing cafes in Newcastle in the council block Hunter Street. When his brother left to open a business in Melbourne Mr. Payzis moved to Scott Street [1944 – 143 Scott Street Newcastle East – Down further was also a Milk Bar / Fruit shop owned by Telemahos Paizis / as listed in History of the Greek Cafes in Newcastle].

The chief-mourners were Mrs. Payzis (widow). Messrs. Peter. Nicholas and Arthur Scott (nephews). Mr. Stratos Payzis (nephew, of Melbourne, who represented his uncle. Mr. Foulds Payzis who was too ill to attend).
